WORK
Zoe Dognaux (b. 2003) is an undergraduate student at Indiana University pursuing her BFA. Zoes paints exclusively from life. Her work resists the increasing removal of art from observed reality. Unaltered by a camera, her paintings endeavor to be honest depictions of sight.
Despite this desire for truth, Zoe understands painting to be inherent fiction. She explores this contradiction in her fantastical still lives. These scenes employ painting’s ability to transform its subject. Within her paintings sentience is no longer reserved for the living, objects become as animate as figures. Zoe’s interest lies in painting’s potential to make the fake become real or the dead to come alive even as it’s governed by reality.
